ABSTRACT
Objectives:
This article analyzes the opportunities and challenges associated with implementing open-source software in organizations, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of the related benefits and risks.

Methods:
The study employed literature review and case study methods. In addition, secondary research based on the analysis of existing data was conducted, which made it possible to verify the prevalence of the use of open-source applications.

Results:
The findings indicate that open-source software can reduce licensing costs while increasing an organization's flexibility and capacity for innovation. Users have full control over the source code, which allows the software to be tailored to the entity's specific needs. Furthermore, the open nature of the software facilitates faster detection and resolution of bugs and fosters greater independence from vendors. At the same time, certain challenges have been identified, including those related to application security, a lack of technical support, and the need for qualified personnel to handle implementation and maintenance. In practice, the effectiveness of its use depends on informed risk management and a well-defined implementation strategy.

Conclusions:
The findings highlight that, while open-source solutions offer significant benefits, their secure and effective use requires proper planning and investment in skills.
